In particular, we invite authors of color and members of minority communities to submit their manuscripts for consideration. We welcome all manuscripts which discuss issues relevant to arts, entertainment, media and intellectual property law.
The Journal is committed to publishing a diverse, inclusive range of scholarship. We believe that the arts and legal communities are greatly enriched by articles which discuss a broad variety of legal issues and which represent the work of authors from all sorts of backgrounds. The Journal therefore welcomes manuscripts that communicate diverse perspectives and particularly encourages authors who have traditionally been underrepresented in legal academia to submit work.
About the Journal
Published pieces have addressed topics including fine arts, music, theater, photography, film, arts funding, computer software, copyright, trademark, patent, unfair competition, antitrust, labor, contracts, rights of publicity, right of privacy, cultural property, arbitration, bankruptcy, First Amendment, and not-for-profit, as well as important symposia and the annual Horace S. Manges lecture.
Originally founded by the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, the Journal was until Volume 25 known as the Columbia-VLA Journal of Law & the Arts. The Journal is also affiliated with the Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts and the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Society at Columbia Law School.
We review submissions throughout the year, making most offers of publication in August and January.

Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
- Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
- The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
Requirements
- All manuscripts submitted for consideration should be in Microsoft Word format, double-spaced, with citations placed in footnotes that conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (Columbia Law Review Ass’n et al. eds., 20th ed. 2015).
- We encourage the use of gender-neutral language.
- Submissions must be under 30,000 words.
- At this time, the Journal does not review submissions from current J.D. students.
- The Journal does not currently publish book reviews.
