CBLR is seeking submissions for its 2018 Survey Issue, The Intersection of Law, Business and Emerging Technologies
Technological advancements are rapidly changing the business law landscape. Emerging technologies often push regulatory boundaries and lead counsel to take greater legal risks than are necessary in traditional business settings. M&A today frequently involves important IP components, and startups are electing to stay private longer with fewer IPOs. Wearables and the internet of things have become increasingly ubiquitous and collect an unprecedented amount of sensitive consumer data, while internet service providers, social networks, and search engines compete to do the same. The actions of the small startup and internet behemoth alike raise questions of competition, data privacy, consumer protection, security, and employee rights. The 2017–2018 survey seeks to address the most pressing legal issues implicated by emerging technologies and the companies and venture capital behind them. Topics may include:
• Issues raised by new technologies themselves, including drones, autonomous cars, cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence, wearables and the internet of things
• Issues related to the regulation of the fintech, biotech, telecommunications markets
• Data privacy, cyber security, consumer data protection
• Venture capital, startups, and the role of in-house counsel at tech companies
Columbia Business Law Review is the first legal periodical at a national law school to be devoted solely to the publication of articles focusing on the interaction of the legal profession and the business community.
